Thursday 21st January “IDA “ Poland, 2013, Cert 12, 82mins.
Director: Pawel Pawlikowski
The scene is Poland in 1962. Anna an 18-year old orphan is preparing to become a nun when the Mother Superior insists she should first visit her sole living relative (her Aunt, Wanda) as a result she discovers that she is Jewish and her real name is Ida. The revelation triggers a heart-wrenching journey for both of them across Poland and into the past. The film could be considered bleak but it reflects Poland in that era (the early 60s) when it was dominated politically by the Soviets and religiously by the Catholic Church. The black and white photography complements the atmosphere but the ending is somewhat opaque .
